Free Privacy Policy Template

A privacy policy is a statement or a legal document that discloses some or all of the ways a party gathers, uses, discloses, and manages a customer or client’s data. It fulfils a legal requirement to protect a customer or client’s privacy. A privacy policy may also contain explanations about the customer or client’s rights concerning their data.

Typically, the personal data that is covered by a privacy policy includes, but is not limited to:

  • Name and addresses
  • Email addresses
  • IP addresses
  • Telephone numbers
  • Debit or credit card details

Generally, privacy policies are meant to be easy for customers or clients to understand. They are often presented in a short, plain-language format. Many websites have a link to their privacy policy in the footer of their website.

Can I copy a privacy policy from another website?

Copying a privacy policy from another website is never a good idea. The privacy policy that you are copying may have been tailored to that website’s specific needs and may not be fit for purpose. Worst still, it could land you in trouble if you get caught because believe it or not a privacy policy is copyright protected by law.

To make sure that you are not putting yourself at unnecessary risk, never copy someone else’s privacy policy. Instead you can use a generic privacy policy template designed to cover a range of scenarios and adjust it to your needs where necessary.

What type of privacy policy is required for a website?

For most websites a basic privacy policy will be sufficient however the more you gather and use personal data, the more complex your privacy policy will become. Our template privacy policy covers a wide range of activities including:

  • Online marketing
  • Account creation
  • Financial transactions
  • Customer communication
  • Newsletter subscriptions

Feel free to add or remove any of the sections to suit the individual needs of your website.

Why are privacy policies important?

A privacy policy is a legal requirement in many countries making it the most important document on your website. Many well known companies have fallen short of their responsibilities and have been sued as a result of the contents of their privacy policies. Google, SnapChat & Delta Airlines are just a few examples of companies to have been caught out by a few mistakes in their privacy policies.

They also help to build trust between a company and its customers through transparency about how customer data will be used. In the event of loss or theft of customer information, whether by accident or malicious intent, privacy policies and customer agreements may be used to limit the liability of the business.
