What is an Employee Code of Conduct?

An employee code of conduct is a written document that spells out the expectations, responsibilities, and behavioral standards employees are required to follow at work. It tells employees what is and isn’t acceptable while at work, and sometimes includes acceptable and unacceptable  behavior even outside of the office as well.

This can include things like dress codes, rules about technology, social media posting, conflicts of interest, workplace safety, harassment or discrimination, or anything else the workplace needs to clarify.  A typical employee code of conduct includes:

• Expectations about employees’ behavior
• What happens if they don’t follow these expectations
• Rules for handling confidential information
• Policies against harassment, theft, bullying, and other important concerns
• Process for reporting violations
• What happens after a concern is reported
• Appeals process
