Free Motor Vehicle Bill of Sale Template
A motor vehicle Bill of Sale is a document that transfers ownership of a given vehicle from a seller to a buyer. While the purchase and sale of used vehicles is arguably the most common use of a Bills of Sale, they can be used for any items of value such as equipment or appliances.
Do I need a Bill of Sale to sell my vehicle?
You will need this document if you are purchasing a vehicle from a private individual and want to keep a record of the transaction for your own legal protection. This will help to avoid any future disputes regarding the sale. A bill of sale can be used by anyone selling or buying a vehicle that does not come with a warranty or guarantee.
The bill of sale expressly states that the goods are ‘sold as seen,’ so there can be no future dispute about the condition of the goods. Indicating on the bill of sale that you have sold your personal property ‘as is’ protects you as a seller in the event that the buyer has any problems with the item after purchase. For example, if a customer purchases a car from you and it breaks down after he or she drives away, you will not be liable for any repairs or damages.
What’s included in a motor vehicle Bill of Sale?
The bill of sale documents everything that a buyer and seller would need to know during the transaction. A bill of sale should at the very least include:
- The identity of the buyer and seller
- The agreed sale price
- The vehicle make & model
- The vehicle identification number (VIN)
- License plate number
- The current odometer reading (mileage)
It is also important to include an odometer disclosure statement. This is a legal requirement in some states and countries and failure to include this may result in fines and/or imprisonment.
